The best iPhone deals right now: September 2023

Shopping for a new iPhone can be a lengthy and sometimes stressful process. There’s a lot to consider between deciding which model to get and looking for ways to save money on your purchase.

Thankfully, carriers and even Apple constantly rotate promotions on all Apple’s current iPhone models. That means you’re not locked into getting whatever the newest (and most expensive) iPhone is, but you can find deals on models including the iPhone SEiPhone 11iPhone 12, and the iPhone 13.And, of course, you can secure deals on the latest iPhone 14 models, including the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max

You’ll notice that many carrier deals have the potential to net you a free iPhone, assuming you have the right type of phone to trade in and sign up for a plan included in the promotion. Naturally, the devil’s in the details, or rather fine print, for any smartphone deal. But that’s why we’re here.

Our favorite deal is the iPhone 14 Max at AT&T. The US telecoms giant will give you up to $1,000 off (applied in bill credits) when you’re willing to trade in an older, eligible device — bringing the monthly cost down from $30.56 to $2.78. Alternatively, AT&T has a range of other offers on the table for iPhones.

Below, you’ll find the best deals currently available through US carriers and major retailers, including new flagship devices, mid-range options, and refurbished products. Make sure to check back with ZDNET, after the Apple event on Sept. 12, where we expect to see the iPhone 15 and more products announced.

At AT&T, you can get an iPhone 14 Pro Max for up to $1,000 off when you have an eligible trade-in device. Instead of paying $30.56 per month for your new iPhone, you could pay as little as $2.78 per month with this deal. The iPhone is available in purple, gold, silver, or black.

Verizon customers can save up to $1000 on the iPhone 14 Pro Max when they sign up for a new line. You can also take advantage of a $280 discount on an iPad when you purchase a 5G Apple iPhone. Alternatively, Verizon is granting customers a free NFL Sunday ticket (up to $449 value) when they buy a phone on an eligible plan.

Regarding trade-ins, you can save up to $800 as long as your old device is free from battery damage.

Considering the iPhone 14 Pro retails for $999.99 when you select a 128GB model, if you are willing to trade in a suitable device, you can pick up your new handset for free at AT&T.

The iPhone 14 Pro, a step up from the iPhone 14, comes with up to 1024 GB storage and comes in five colors. If you don’t take up the trade-in offer, the 128GB version of the handset will be priced at $27.78 monthly.

If you’d prefer to pick up an Apple iPhone 14 Pro at T-Mobile, you can save up to $830, applied in bill credits over 24 months, with a suitable trade-in device and an agreement to set up a new line. The same deal applies when you trade on a Go5G Next or Go5G Plus! plan.

Over at T-Mobile, both new and existing customers can get a new iPhone 14 with an $830 discount (via 24 months of bill credits) when they trade in an eligible device on the carrier’s Go5G Plus! plan. To get this deal, you’ll have to trade a suitable device, and depending on the model and condition, your discount will vary.

While researching the best Apple iPhone deals, we scoured the web and checked out promotional prices offered by major US retailers and telecoms firms including Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

We wanted to ensure we found the best deals on iPhones, including the new flagship models and older variants. We’ve shown you the best discounts and trade-in offers available — but remember that stocks can be limited and sales pulled at any time.

Factors influencing our recommendations include:

  • Price: The main factor we consider is the price. If the discount isn’t noteworthy, relative to the original price point — or no trade-in offers are available — then we don’t consider it worthy of inclusion.
  • Variety: Here at ZDNET, we want to provide you with a variety of iPhone options with bonuses. We’ve selected deals that bring down the price of your new handset, alongside bonus incentives such as free services or discounts on other devices in the Apple ecosystem.
  • Availability: If we come across a great Apple deal but only a few units are in stock unless it is a stellar saving you only see once in a blue moon, we will discount it and select a product with better stock levels instead.

The best iPhone currently on the market is the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The 6.7-inch model is the largest of the iPhone 14 line and comes stacked with the latest features that Apple has to offer, such as Dynamic Island, an A16 bionic chip, and a new 48MP main sensor that shoots detailed imagery.
